USA blamed for deadly attack on Crimea by Russia

In a recent development, Russia has accused the United States of being responsible for an attack on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. The attack, which utilized five U.S.-supplied missiles, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least five individuals, including three children, and left 124 others injured.

The Russian Defence Ministry stated that four of the missiles, equipped with cluster warheads, were intercepted by air defence systems, while the fifth missile detonated mid-air. The ministry alleged that the U.S. set the missiles' flight coordinates based on information obtained from U.S. spy satellites, placing direct responsibility on Washington for the attack.

The United States had recently begun supplying Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 kilometers. However, Reuters was unable to independently verify the details of the incident as reported by both sides.

Television footage broadcasted on Russian state television showed chaotic scenes of people fleeing a beach in Sevastopol, with some individuals being carried away on sun loungers. The Russian-installed authorities in Crimea reported that missile fragments had landed near a beach in Sevastopol, where locals were enjoying their holiday.

Following the attack, Russian officials vowed to respond, with President Vladimir Putin maintaining close contact with the military. However, neither Ukraine nor the United States have issued any official statements regarding the incident.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the involvement of Western allies, has escalated tensions in the region. Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 continues to be a point of contention, with differing views on the status of the peninsula. Putin's deployment of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 has further raised concerns about the potential for direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
