Trump's bill faces Senate challenges as Musk opposes it

President Donald Trump’s proposed tax-and-spending legislation, often referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” is encountering significant resistance in the Senate. This pushback is exacerbated by a recent report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which indicates that the bill could increase federal deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next ten years and would result in nearly 11 million Americans losing health coverage due to cuts to Medicaid.

Several Senate Republicans have expressed concerns about these findings, with some, like Senator Rand Paul, suggesting that Congress has a poor track record of fiscal responsibility. Despite attempts by White House officials to challenge the CBO's analysis, fiscal conservatives in the Senate remain skeptical. Additionally, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly opposed the bill, branding it a “disgusting abomination” and encouraging his followers to lobby against it.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has been instrumental in promoting the bill, is facing challenges in maintaining Republican unity, particularly regarding provisions that affect state and local tax deductions (SALT) and Medicaid funding. Some senators have indicated that substantial amendments to the bill are necessary to secure broader support, with potential changes to SALT caps and Medicaid provisions being discussed.

The Senate’s approach now appears to involve drafting an amended version of the bill, focusing on less contentious elements first. However, any changes made in the Senate will require House approval, complicating the legislative process further. As the midterm elections approach, the implications of the bill are significant for both Trump and the Republican Party, especially given concerns over tax increases for many Americans if the 2017 tax cuts are not extended.
