Trump warns of potential sanctions on Russia if peace is not reached

President Donald Trump announced that he is contemplating the imposition of sanctions on Russia due to its ongoing military actions against Ukraine. He characterized Russia's efforts as "absolutely pounding" Ukraine on the battlefield and indicated that these sanctions would remain in place until a peace agreement is reached between the two nations. Trump urged both Russia and Ukraine to engage in negotiations promptly, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and a final settlement.

In a related statement, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted the administration's readiness to escalate sanctions against Russia. He criticized the Biden administration's current sanctions on Russian energy, suggesting they have been insufficient and have inadvertently supported the Russian war effort. Bessent asserted that the current administration is prepared to implement more aggressive sanctions to leverage peace negotiations.

This potential move to sanction Russia is not unprecedented for the Trump administration. In April 2018, it sanctioned several Russian oligarchs and officials, targeting key figures and organizations tied to the Russian government. Further actions were taken in August 2019, when Trump authorized measures to restrict loans and assistance to Russia from international financial institutions.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an end to Russian attacks, advocating for a "silence in the sky" to foster conditions conducive to peace. He reported significant missile and drone attacks by Russia, with Ukrainian forces claiming to have intercepted a portion of these threats. The conflict continues to escalate, prompting international calls for resolution and diplomacy.
