Trump seeks $230 million from DOJ over investigating him

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a lunch event at the White House and made headlines by demanding $230 million from the Department of Justice (DOJ) as compensation for investigations conducted during and after his presidency. According to a report from The New York Times, Trump has initiated an administrative claim process, which may be a precursor to potential lawsuits against the DOJ.

The claims stem from two investigations. The first, submitted in 2023, involves the DOJ’s inquiries into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible connections to Trump's campaign. The second claim, filed in 2024, concerns a search conducted by the FBI at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in 2022, related to the investigation of classified documents retained after his presidency.

Notably, Trump has indicated that any settlement will likely require approval from individuals he appointed during his second term, including Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who previously represented Trump in criminal cases. A federal court in Florida indicted Trump in connection with the Mar-a-Lago investigation, but the case was dismissed after he won the 2024 election. The DOJ later opted not to pursue an appeal.

During a recent event in the Oval Office, Trump referenced his claims, expressing uncertainty about how to settle the lawsuit, given that it involves a potential conflict of interest as he is both the plaintiff and the president. This development continues to unfold, and further updates are anticipated as the situation progresses.
