Trump says Russia and Ukraine reached an energy ceasefire

Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire as Ukraine Awaits Details

President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, but he did not specify its terms. Moscow did not immediately respond, and the White House offered no clarification.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine supported the proposal but was awaiting details from Washington and wanted Russia to confirm its support. In an interview broadcast Sunday, he said Kyiv was prepared to stop striking Russian refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy system. He urged Trump to press Russia to agree.

The announcement followed an exchange over Ukraine’s leadership. Trump said Saturday that Ukraine should have a new president, arguing that Zelenskyy had not done enough to end the war. Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine could organize an election if Russia agreed to a full 60-day ceasefire and security conditions allowed voting to take place.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and its constitution prohibits elections during martial law. Zelenskyy’s term formally ended in May 2024, but he remains in office pending the inauguration of a successor. Displacement, Russian control of part of Ukraine and the presence of troops at the front would also complicate a nationwide vote.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike shut down a Yandex data center east of Moscow on Sunday, disrupting digital services, according to the company and a Russian independent news outlet. It was the third reported strike on Yandex facilities in four days.

The two countries continued to report casualties from other attacks. Zelenskyy said a Russian bombing in Zaporizhzhia on Saturday killed 23 people, including four children. Officials in Russia’s Bryansk region said a Ukrainian drone strike killed one man and wounded two women. The reported ceasefire’s scope and implementation remained unclear.
