Trump says Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy ceasefire

Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire; Ukraine Awaits Details

President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, but he gave no terms. Moscow did not immediately respond, and the White House offered no clarification. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv supported the proposal but was awaiting details from Washington and a commitment from Russia.

In a Sunday interview, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would stop attacking Russian refineries if Moscow ended strikes on Ukraine’s energy system. He urged Trump to press Russia to accept such an arrangement. Zelenskyy also said he had discussed the ceasefire with the leaders of Canada and Finland and NATO’s secretary-general.

The announcement followed a disagreement over Ukrainian elections. Trump called Saturday for Ukraine to choose a new president, criticizing Zelenskyy’s handling of efforts to end the war and linking Ukrainian strikes to high U.S. diesel prices. Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine could organize a vote if Russia agreed to a 60-day total ceasefire and security conditions allowed safe voting. Elections are barred under martial law, which has been in force since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy’s term expired in May 2024, but he remains in office pending the swearing-in of a successor. Trump recently agreed to buy Russian diesel, drawing Ukrainian and European criticism.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike shut down a Yandex data center in Vladimir, Russia, disrupting services used for transportation, shopping and banking, according to reports and users. It was the third attack on a Yandex facility in four days. The company reported no injuries at the Vladimir site.

Separately, Zelenskyy said a Russian bombing in Zaporizhzhia killed 23 people, including four children. Local officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Bryansk region killed one person and wounded two. The reported ceasefire’s scope and implementation remained unclear amid continuing attacks.
