Trump Plans Executive Order mandating Voter ID

President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an Executive Order mandating voter identification (ID) for all U.S. elections. He stated on Truth Social, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS!” This proposal is expected to face legal challenges, as many argue it may be unconstitutional.

Trump's announcement also included his intention to prohibit mail-in voting, except for individuals who are severely ill or military personnel stationed far from their voting locations. These proposed reforms stem from Trump's long-standing assertions that widespread voter fraud influenced the outcome of the 2020 election—a claim that has not been substantiated by evidence or investigations.

Currently, voter ID laws vary significantly by state. As of 2025, 36 states require some form of identification at the polls, with Republican-led states often implementing stricter regulations in response to claims of fraud. Some states allow exceptions for certain groups, including low-income voters and those with religious objections to being photographed.

The authority to regulate elections lies primarily with state legislatures, prompting questions about the legality of Trump’s proposed order. Previous efforts to alter election laws at the federal level have been blocked, as the Constitution does not grant the president this power.

Critics of voter ID laws highlight research indicating that such measures can disproportionately affect voters of color, the elderly, and students. According to a study by Voteriders, nearly 34.5 million Americans lack an up-to-date government-issued ID, which can create barriers to voting.

In response to Trump’s announcement, 19 states have already filed lawsuits, labeling the executive order as an unconstitutional overreach. A federal judge previously issued a preliminary injunction against a related executive order, asserting it violated constitutional principles regarding state sovereignty in election administration.
