Trump Orders National Guard to Address L.A. Immigration Protests, Faces Backlash

Large-scale protests have erupted in the Los Angeles area in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and recent raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Mayor Karen Bass has emphasized the right to peaceful protest while condemning violence, stating that those responsible for unrest will face consequences. She has been in communication with federal officials to navigate the situation.

In a controversial decision, Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles to address the protests, which he characterized as driven by “radical left instigators.” He announced a ban on masks at these gatherings, questioning what protesters might be concealing. The U.S. Northern Command confirmed the arrival of troops tasked with protecting federal property and personnel.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the federal intervention, claiming it would exacerbate tensions rather than alleviate them. He urged residents to remain peaceful and resist violence, asserting that the National Guard deployment serves to create a spectacle rather than respond to a genuine need for security.

Senator Bernie Sanders voiced strong opposition to Trump’s actions, suggesting they signal a move toward authoritarianism without local support. Conversely, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin defended the President’s decision, arguing that it is necessary to protect citizens when local leadership fails to do so.

The American Civil Liberties Union condemned the deployment, framing it as a “declaration of war” against Californians exercising their First Amendment rights. The protests, which began following ICE operations resulting in numerous arrests, have led to clashes with law enforcement, prompting further demonstrations.

As tensions escalate, experts warn that the situation reflects deeper issues surrounding immigration policy and civil rights in the United States.
