Trump nominates Mike Waltz as UN ambassador

U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, alongside Vice President JD Vance, visited the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. This visit follows President Donald Trump's announcement that he would nominate Waltz to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, a decision made public on the same day.

The announcement came amid reports that Waltz would be stepping down as national security advisor due to controversies surrounding the use of a Signal messaging app. This app was reportedly utilized by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to share U.S. military plans, which inadvertently included the editor of The Atlantic magazine in a chat thread created by Waltz.

Previously, Trump had nominated Rep. Elise Stefanik for the U.N. ambassador position but withdrew that nomination, citing the slim Republican majority in the House. In his announcement, Trump expressed confidence in Waltz's capabilities, referencing his military and congressional experience. He stated, "Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation's Interests first," and emphasized his belief that Waltz would continue this focus in his new role.

In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to take on the responsibilities of national security advisor while maintaining his role at the State Department. Waltz, who has previously represented a Florida district in the House and served as a Special Forces officer in the U.S. Army, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving the administration.

As of now, it remains unclear how long Rubio will serve in the interim national security advisor role. The situation continues to develop in the context of ongoing discussions about national security and the administration's broader objectives.
