U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment over the recent escalation of violence in Ukraine, particularly in light of ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving peace between Russia and Ukraine. In statements made at the White House, Trump acknowledged that while American efforts are progressing, he remains wary of Russian President Vladimir Putin's intentions, suggesting that Putin may be feigning interest in a peaceful resolution.
Trump emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting the recent attacks that resulted in civilian casualties. He stated, “When I see rockets being shot into cities, that’s no good. We aren’t going to allow it.” His remarks come as Russia has intensified its bombardment of Ukraine, even following a prisoner swap that occurred the previous week.
Historically, Trump has maintained a favorable view of Putin but has recently adopted a more critical stance in response to Russia's military actions. He referred to Putin as “CRAZY” and warned that the Russian leader is “playing with fire.” Trump has also addressed the issue of potential sanctions, indicating that he prefers to avoid new penalties if they could jeopardize ongoing negotiations. He remarked, “If I think I’m close to getting a deal, I don’t want to screw it up by doing that.”
The conflict, which began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, has resulted in significant casualties among military personnel on both sides. The United Nations has recently reported that Russia is systematically committing war crimes against civilians, particularly in the Kherson region of Ukraine.
