Trump Announces White House Ban on Three News Organizations
President Donald Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would be banned from the White House, citing what he described as repeated false and deliberately negative reporting. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the restrictions would take effect immediately and warned that other outlets could face similar action.
Speaking later in the Oval Office, Trump said no single article or broadcast prompted the decision. Instead, he characterized it as a response to years of coverage that he believes is intended to damage Republicans and his administration. Asked about the scope of the ban, he said he did not want representatives of the outlets in his office or the White House.
The practical impact remained uncertain Friday afternoon. CNN reported that its journalists were still working at the White House, with no removals observed in the briefing room. The network said it supported its White House team and argued that any enforced ban would violate constitutional protections for press freedom. The White House Press Office did not provide additional details.
The announcement could lead to another legal dispute over presidential authority to regulate media access. In 2025, Trump restricted Associated Press reporters from certain presidential settings after the organization declined to use his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. The Associated Press sued, and that case remains unresolved. During Trump’s first term, CNN also successfully challenged the revocation of correspondent Jim Acosta’s credentials.
The move comes amid broader conflict between Trump and news organizations, including lawsuits over coverage he has disputed. Trump’s administration has described itself as highly transparent, citing his frequent exchanges with reporters. However, the proposed restrictions raise questions about how the government may manage access while respecting the First Amendment’s guarantee of a free press.
