Trump and Vance have a heated meeting with Zelensky at the White House

During a meeting at the White House on Friday, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance engaged in a heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting was initially intended to discuss a new mineral deal but quickly became contentious.

Vance confronted Zelensky about his criticisms of the U.S. administration, questioning the respectfulness of his comments amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized that Zelensky should express gratitude towards the U.S. for its support, highlighting Ukraine's manpower issues and conscription practices. In response, Zelensky acknowledged the challenges of war but argued that the U.S. would eventually feel the consequences of the situation.

The dialogue intensified as Trump interjected, stating that Zelensky was in a “bad position” and accusing him of gambling with the lives of millions. Trump noted that without U.S. support, Ukraine would lack leverage in negotiations. Vance further pressed Zelensky on his past political actions in the U.S., suggesting he had not adequately acknowledged American assistance.

Zelensky countered by remarking on Vance's tone and reiterated his gratitude. The discussion also touched upon the financial and military aid provided by the U.S. to Ukraine, with Trump asserting that attitudes need to change for progress to occur.

Initially, the meeting included less contentious dialogue, with Trump expressing hopes of being viewed as a peacemaker and affirming continued military support for Ukraine. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was present, later commented that the mineral deal would benefit both nations.

Despite the attempts to negotiate, Zelensky left without finalizing the mineral agreement.
