Trump Administration Responds After Judge Blocks DOGE From Treasury System Use

The Trump administration has requested a federal judge to lift a court order that restricts access to the Treasury Department’s payment system for top officials. This system manages trillions of dollars in transactions annually. The order was issued by U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer, appointed by President Obama, in response to a lawsuit filed by 19 Democratic attorneys general. The lawsuit challenges the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which seeks access to Treasury records to identify potential waste, fraud, and abuse within federal spending.

The administration's motion, submitted to Judge Jeannette Vargas, argues that the court’s ruling represents an overreach and undermines democratic accountability. The Department of Justice contends that all executive agencies should be overseen by leaders who are politically accountable to the president, emphasizing the need for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other officials to fulfill their roles regarding the payment system.

In a related development, DOGE recently achieved a legal victory when a federal judge ruled against a move to block the department's access to U.S. Labor Department systems. This ongoing legal battle reflects broader tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic officials regarding oversight of government spending.

DOGE, chaired by Elon Musk, has faced criticism from some Democrats, who argue that Musk lacks the qualifications for this oversight role. In defense, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked that President Trump was elected with a mandate to enhance government efficiency, implying that collaboration with Musk is part of fulfilling this promise.
