Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside the Delaney Hall Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark, New Jersey. His arrest followed a confrontation involving New Jersey Democratic lawmakers and federal authorities at the detention center. The incident has drawn attention due to the involvement of multiple lawmakers and allegations of misconduct.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicated that additional arrests may follow, stating that body camera footage captured members of Congress allegedly assaulting ICE enforcement officers. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin noted that the situation was "evolving," suggesting a potential for further legal action. She emphasized that the agency would not tolerate assaults on law enforcement personnel.
Three lawmakers—Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver—were present during the incident and have disputed the DHS's characterization of events. Menendez claimed that they were exercising their legal right to conduct oversight at the facility, while Coleman described the altercation as a result of ICE agents pushing them.
In response, McLaughlin criticized the lawmakers' actions as a "bizarre political stunt" and maintained that they could not unlawfully access detention facilities. Baraka, who is campaigning for governor, was charged with trespassing after allegedly disregarding warnings from DHS officials. He was released without bond later that evening.
