Trump Addresses Americans Stranded Following Cartel Violence

The Trump administration continues to apply pressure on the Mexican government following a successful operation that resulted in the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the administration is urging Mexico to enhance its efforts in combating the influx of illegal drugs into the United States, emphasizing the importance of securing the southern border.

Leavitt described the operation that took place over the weekend in Tapalpa, Jalisco, as a significant achievement attributed to President Trump’s leadership. She highlighted the administration's focus on addressing the activities of drug cartels, which have posed a long-standing threat by trafficking dangerous substances into the U.S. The administration has previously designated some cartels as terrorist organizations and has conducted military operations against drug transportation efforts.

In the wake of the operation, violent reactions from cartel members were reported, including roadblocks and the burning of vehicles in popular tourist areas. The State Department responded by advising American citizens in Jalisco and surrounding regions to shelter in place, leading to flight cancellations by airlines operating out of Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Tourist experiences have been impacted, with some expressing fear during the unrest, as illustrated by Jim Beck, who described a distressing scene while trying to navigate the situation. Despite these incidents, Leavitt assured that there have been no confirmed reports of Americans being harmed, kidnapped, or killed, reiterating a firm stance against any threats to U.S. citizens in Mexico. The State Department has also established 24/7 support lines for Americans stranded in the affected areas.
