Tehran postpones talks as Iranian media report ship struck near Hormuz

Iranian Cargo Vessel Attack Heightens Strait of Hormuz Tensions

An Iranian cargo vessel was struck early Sunday near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and injuring four, according to Iranian state media. The Qeshm governor attributed the incident to a “terrorist enemy,” although authorities had not identified the projectile or the attacker in strike.

The United States military did not immediately comment. President Donald Trump later declined to say whether American forces were responsible, while maintaining that Iran was seeking an agreement with Washington. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, meanwhile, said his country would not be pressured into surrender despite regional hostilities and tensions.

The incident renewed concerns about maritime security in one of the world’s most important shipping corridors. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a vessel had been hit by a projectile while crossing the strait, causing a fire and prompting evacuations. It remained unclear whether reports described same event.

The attack came as commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained limited amid wider conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Washington says its military has assisted ships travelling near Oman’s coast, while Iran has proposed collecting transit fees and directing shipping routes through Iranian and Omani waters.

A planned Monday meeting in Oman involving regional foreign ministers was postponed shortly after the incident. Iran and Oman said the delay followed requests from several regional governments and was intended to support consensus. Iraq had confirmed its participation, while Bahrain declined because it lacks diplomatic relations with Tehran currently.

The proposed talks were expected to address management of shipping and broader Gulf security concerns. Regional governments have faced Iranian missile and drone attacks that Tehran says target American military assets. Pezeshkian also reported discussions with Abu Dhabi’s crown prince at a summit in New Delhi, emphasizing future regional co-operation.
