George Glezmann, an American tourist who was abducted in Afghanistan over two years ago, has been released by the Taliban, as confirmed by the U.S. State Department. Glezmann, an airline mechanic from Atlanta, was seized in December 2022 and was later designated as wrongfully detained by U.S. officials. His release is the third of its kind for American detainees since January.
The release was facilitated through negotiations involving Qatari diplomats. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Qatar's role in the process and indicated that Glezmann was en route back to the United States to reunite with his wife, Aleksandra. In his statement, Rubio emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to secure the release of other Americans still held in Afghanistan.
Glezmann’s return follows a similar arrangement made in January during the Biden administration, which saw the release of two other American citizens, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty. In that case, their release was part of a prisoner exchange involving a Taliban detainee. However, Glezmann’s release did not involve any U.S. concessions, being characterized as a goodwill gesture by the Taliban.
President Biden had previously considered a proposal that would have included Glezmann's release in exchange for a detainee at Guantanamo Bay, but decided against it unless certain conditions involving another American, Mahmood Habibi, were met. Habibi's family claims he was taken by Taliban forces, a claim the Taliban has denied.
