On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocked an order that would lift pandemic-era restrictions on asylum seekers. The restrictions, referred to as Title 42, were implemented in March 2020 by then-President Donald Trump and have prevented many migrants from seeking asylum in the United States. In response to this action, nineteen states asked the court for an emergency stay that would keep the immigration restrictions in place. Immigration advocates have argued that the policy violates American and international obligations to people fleeing persecution. Conservative-leaning states are concerned that lifting Title 42 will lead to a surge of migrants into their states. The U.S. Supreme Court has asked the government to respond by 5 p.m. Tuesday and is expected to make a decision on the restrictions in the coming days. It is yet to be seen if the restrictions will be lifted, or if they will remain in place.
