ShinyHunters Claims FBI Data Breach
Digital extortion group ShinyHunters says it breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation and obtained information linked to thousands of employees and job applicants. The FBI had not responded to requests for comment as of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, leaving the claim unconfirmed.
The group said the alleged attack was retaliation for an FBI advisory issued in May 2026, which described ShinyHunters’ methods and urged potential victims not to pay extortion demands. On its dark-web site and in communications with Reuters, the group claimed it had collected information on nearly all FBI agents and people who had applied for bureau jobs.
ShinyHunters provided a screenshot that it said showed a vandalized FBI employment website, along with a sample of purportedly stolen records. Reuters could not independently authenticate the screenshot. However, the FBI’s employment site displayed a notice saying both the site and the Special Agent Applicant Portal were unavailable.
Reuters compared names and postal addresses from the sample with credit bureau records and previously leaked data held by dark-web intelligence company District 4 Labs. It found matches in at least nine cases. The checks indicated that some details may be genuine, but did not establish whether they came from FBI systems or another source.
The alleged incident follows several other attacks attributed to ShinyHunters. The group has claimed responsibility for obtaining business records from Rockstar Games and for a May breach involving the Canvas education platform, which disrupted schools internationally, including Canadian universities. Anthropic also recently reported detecting hackers linked to the group attempting to use its artificial-intelligence tools.
Separately, ShinyHunters said it had entered a dispute with rival cybercrime group cl0p. The public claims underscore ongoing tensions among criminal hacking organizations, although the scope and source of the alleged FBI data remain uncertain pending confirmation from the bureau or investigators.
