Several House races still undecided almost three weeks post-election

As the dust settles after the 2024 midterm elections, three U.S. House races are still awaiting final results, leaving the exact size of the Republican majority in the 119th Congress uncertain. In California's 13th Congressional district, Republican Rep. John Duarte currently holds a 204-vote lead over Democrat Adam Gray, with less than 3% of the vote still to be counted. This race is reminiscent of the 2022 midterm election when Duarte narrowly defeated Gray by just 564 votes.

In California's 45th Congressional district, Democrat Derek Tran is leading Republican Rep. Michelle Steel by 545 votes, with 99% of the vote counted. Meanwhile, in Iowa's 1st Congressional district, Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is holding onto an 800-vote lead over Democrat Christina Bohannan as a recount of the race is underway.

While Decision Desk HQ has called the race for Miller-Meeks in Iowa, the Associated Press has not yet declared a winner. If the current results hold in each of these uncalled House races, the final tally would give Republicans 221 seats and Democrats 214. Additionally, Republicans will have to contend with special elections to replace Reps. Elise Stefanik (NY) and Mike Waltz (FL), who have been selected to serve in the new Trump administration, as well as former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who resigned.

Overall, the final results of these three House races will have implications for the makeup of the 119th Congress and the balance of power between Republicans and Democrats. Voters and political observers will continue to closely monitor the counting process and await the official outcomes in these closely contested races.
