In a significant escalation of conflict, Russia launched its largest air attack on Ukraine to date, targeting the main building of the Ukrainian government in Kyiv. This assault, reported on Sunday, resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including an infant, whose remains were recovered from the rubble. The attack also left at least 18 people injured and caused extensive damage to residential buildings in various districts of Kyiv.
Ukrainian officials indicated that the attack involved a massive deployment of 805 drones and 13 missiles, with Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepting 751 drones and four missiles. Witnesses noted flames and heavy smoke billowing from the government building located in the historic Pecherskyi district, marking the first instance of direct damage to this key structure since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In addition to the strikes in Kyiv, explosions were reported in Kremenchuk, which disrupted power and damaged local infrastructure. The Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko emphasized the need for international support and military assistance, stating the urgency of the situation as civilian casualties continue to rise.
Moscow has not issued a comment on the recent attacks, while both sides maintain their claims of avoiding civilian targets amidst the ongoing conflict. This event marks the second major strike on Kyiv within two weeks, coinciding with diminishing hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the war.
The international community remains engaged, with discussions around further military aid and sanctions against Russia.
