Renee Good's family sues U.S. government and ICE officer

Renee Good’s Family Files Lawsuits Over Fatal Minneapolis Shooting

Renee Good’s partner and brother have filed two lawsuits stemming from her fatal shooting by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. The suits allege wrongful death, civil rights violations and a conspiracy involving federal officials and others during an immigration enforcement operation. Good, 37, was a mother of three.

Becca Good, her partner, and Brent Ganger, her brother, filed the cases against the United States and several individuals. According to Becca Good, Renee had stopped their vehicle in the street to support neighbors during the operation. Bystander video shows her in a red SUV blocking part of the road and honking as officers approached.

An officer ordered Good out of the vehicle. She briefly reversed and turned the steering wheel while Becca Good called for her to drive. Officer Jonathan Ross fired through the windshield and then twice more near the driver’s window, according to a video analysis cited in the report. Federal officials said at the time that Ross acted in self-defense and characterized Good’s actions as domestic terrorism.

The lawsuit against the federal government seeks damages for wrongful death and alleges that Becca Good experienced emotional distress. It requests a trial before a judge. A separate lawsuit seeks a jury trial and alleges a conspiracy to interfere with civil rights. It claims the immigration operation targeted Somali and Hispanic communities in Minnesota and people who observed or documented enforcement activity. Those claims remain allegations.

The second suit names Ross and officials including Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem and Gregory Bovino. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the report said. Good’s shooting, followed weeks later by the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, prompted nationwide criticism of immigration enforcement. Becca Good said the loss affected other families as well.
