Dayton James Webber, a 27-year-old professional cornhole player who is a quadruple amputee, has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during an argument in La Plata, Maryland. According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office, Webber was driving a car when he shot a passenger, identified as 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells, who was seated in the front seat. Following the incident, Webber reportedly stopped the vehicle and asked two passengers in the back to assist in removing Wells from the car; however, they refused and instead alerted law enforcement.
Webber fled the scene with Wells still in the vehicle. Approximately two hours later, a body was discovered in a yard in Charlotte Hall, about 16 kilometers from the initial location of the shooting. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene. The Charles County Sheriff's Office has indicated that Webber will face charges including first-degree murder and second-degree murder, and they are seeking his extradition from Virginia, where he was apprehended as a fugitive from justice.
Webber, who had his limbs amputated as an infant due to a serious blood infection, has been active in the cornhole community, a sport involving the tossing of bean bags into a slanted board. The American Cornhole League has acknowledged the situation involving Webber but has refrained from making further comments as the legal process unfolds. This incident has raised questions regarding the implications of violence in sports and the responsibilities of organizations in such situations.
