Two Dead After Shooting at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn
Authorities in Dearborn, Michigan, are investigating a shooting Friday afternoon at Fairlane Town Center mall that left at least two people dead and an innocent bystander injured, according to police officials. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the incident occurred inside the mall and prompted a large law enforcement response as officers worked to secure the scene.
Shahin said early information indicates the shooting was not random. He described it as a dispute between two parties who knew each other and were at the mall when a fight escalated into gunfire. Police believe both parties had firearms. Several people connected to the incident were taken to the police station for interviews as investigators sought to determine what led to the confrontation.
Local reporting from FOX 2 Detroit said one victim was shot in the head and another in the abdomen. Authorities had not released suspect information as of the initial reports, and officials did not immediately provide additional details about the conditions of those injured beyond the confirmed fatalities.
The Dearborn Police Department used social media to advise residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers and investigators remained on site. Officials said the mall would be closed for at least several hours during the response and investigation. Michigan State Police also confirmed it was assisting Dearborn authorities with the case.
Speaking to reporters, Shahin said public violence in a shopping center was unacceptable, while emphasizing that investigators were still gathering facts. The shooting added to ongoing concerns about firearm incidents in public commercial spaces, though officials stressed that preliminary evidence points to an isolated conflict rather than a broader threat to the community.
Police said the investigation remains active and additional information is expected as interviews are completed and evidence from the mall is reviewed by local authorities.
