Seattle police say at least three suspects were involved in a deadly shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle on Sunday, including one person who died at the scene. Court documents indicate that a 15-year-old detainee and a deceased acquaintance exchanged gunfire with at least one unidentified suspect.
The shooting began around 6 p.m. during the final hours of the three-day festival at Seattle Center. Three people were killed: two men, aged 19 and 44, and a 56-year-old woman. Two died at the scene, while the third died at a hospital. At least four others were injured, including a two-year-old boy who was reported in satisfactory condition. Three adult victims were later discharged.
The teenager was held in juvenile detention while authorities investigated possible firearms violations and first-degree assault. The teen did not attend a scheduled initial court appearance on Monday, and officials did not immediately explain the absence.
Early public statements about the number of suspects were inconsistent. Mayor Katie Wilson initially said two people were in custody. Police later announced that one suspect had been detained and another might be at large. Court filings subsequently identified a third possible participant. Officials said the changing accounts reflected efforts to confirm information during a chaotic investigation.
Gunfire prompted festival visitors and vendors to flee, with many sheltering inside nearby buildings. Police evacuated the area and searched an IMAX theatre after reports that a suspect may have entered it. Authorities said dozens of officers were already providing event security, and some witnessed a suspect firing.
Vendors returned Monday to retrieve equipment and abandoned food. A candlelight vigil was planned at Seattle Center’s International Fountain. Investigators continued searching for at least one unidentified suspect, while officials said there was no continuing threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
