Pentagon says two US troops were killed in an Iranian attack

Two US Service Members Killed in Iranian Attack in Jordan

The Pentagon said Saturday that two United States service members were killed during an Iranian missile and drone attack in Jordan on Friday. Another American service member remains missing, while several others sustained injuries.

According to US Central Command, American and partner forces were defending against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones when the deaths occurred. Four injured service members were evacuated to local hospitals and later discharged. Others received treatment for minor injuries and returned to duty.

The military said it would not release the identities of those killed until at least 24 hours after their families had been notified. The deaths are the first publicly acknowledged American combat fatalities in the Middle East conflict since March.

Since fighting with Iran began on February 28, 16 US service members have died either in accidents or through enemy action, according to the account. More than 425 have been injured. The conflict started after the United States and Israel carried out surprise attacks on Iran.

US military operations against Iran resumed earlier this month after a temporary ceasefire collapsed and negotiations failed to produce a peace agreement. Iran has since attacked vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz and launched missiles and drones toward several Middle Eastern countries, including nations where American military bases are located.

In response, the United States has conducted frequent strikes on Iranian military targets. These operations have focused on surveillance installations, weapons systems, maritime assets, and other facilities.

The latest American casualties may increase pressure on the Trump administration to respond. However, the Pentagon had not announced any specific retaliatory measures in the information provided. The incident reflects the continuing risks to US personnel and regional partners as hostilities continue across multiple locations in the Middle East. Diplomatic efforts have so far not produced a durable regional settlement.
