NYPD on alert for New Year's Eve celebration security

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is preparing for the upcoming Times Square New Year's Eve celebration amidst a "heightened threat environment." With more than a million visitors expected to attend the event, the NYPD is taking extensive security measures to ensure the safety of attendees.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that there are no credible threats to the event at this time, but the department has been on high alert since the one-year anniversary of the 2023 attacks in Israel. The NYPD's new class of recruits will be working their first detail on Tuesday night, with over 600 new officers participating in the security efforts.

In light of recent incidents, such as the suspected terror attack on a Christmas market in Germany, the NYPD is increasing security measures, including deploying drone teams and specialized units throughout the area. Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner emphasized the importance of keeping the event safe, especially in light of the high-risk nature of New Year's Eve celebrations worldwide.

The NYPD has also addressed concerns about the emerging threat of the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua (TdA), stating that there is no specific threat related to the gang in connection to the Times Square event. The department will be utilizing various teams, including pickpocket teams and hotel response teams, to monitor for suspicious activity during the event.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials have encouraged attendees to use public transportation to reach Times Square and have implemented strict security measures, including restrictions on umbrellas, backpacks, large bags, coolers, chairs, and alcohol in the viewing area. The NYPD is working in coordination with city, state, and federal partners to ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for all.
