Roman Space Telescope Records First Test Image
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope captured its first image of stars while traveling toward its operating position about one million miles from Earth. The image is blurry, but engineers said that result was expected because the telescope’s detectors remain configured for launch and its optics have not yet been aligned.
NASA completed Roman’s assembly in November 2025 and launched it on August 30, 2026. The September 15 test image provides a baseline for engineers to align the optics and adjust focus. The team also plans to activate a fine-guidance system that will allow the observatory to lock onto targets. NASA expects the first science images in early 2027.
Roman’s main camera, the Wide Field Instrument, is a 300-megapixel infrared imager designed to capture sections of the sky in detail. Each exposure will cover an area larger than the full moon appears from Earth. Scientists will use the instrument to study planets beyond the solar system, investigate dark energy, and map the distribution of matter across the universe.
Before taking the image, NASA allowed the instrument’s 18 infrared detectors to dry for 10 days, then cooled and activated them. Engineers also tested its calibration system, filters, and focus mechanism. NASA reported that these systems are operating as expected.
Testing has also begun on Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument, which is intended to block starlight and reveal the fainter reflected light of orbiting planets. Engineers have confirmed communication with and control of its components, although more testing remains.
NASA has also revised Roman’s possible operating lifetime. Although designed for a five-year primary mission, fuel savings and additional propellant could support at least 22 years of operations. The estimate reflects fuel availability, not a guaranteed mission duration. Upcoming work includes focusing the telescope and completing guidance checks.
