Elon Musk's relationship with President Donald Trump has experienced a significant downturn, leading Musk to propose the creation of a new political party aimed at the moderate majority. On June 5, Musk conducted a poll on his platform X (formerly Twitter), asking his followers if a new party was needed to represent the 80% of Americans he believes are in the political middle. Approximately 80% of respondents voted in favor of the idea. Following the poll results, Musk suggested the name "The America Party," which aligns with his existing political action committee, America PAC, established to support Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.
Musk's political affiliations have fluctuated over the years. He previously supported Trump’s Democratic opponents in the 2016 and 2020 elections but shifted toward Republican support during the 2022 midterms, culminating in his role as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, recent tensions have surfaced, particularly over Musk's criticism of Trump’s proposed legislation, dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which Musk labeled an “abomination.” Their feud escalated further with Musk making unfounded allegations linking Trump to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, which he later deleted.
In response, Trump stated on his platform, Truth Social, that Musk was "wearing thin" and claimed he had asked Musk to leave the White House. While Musk's proposal for a new party has garnered attention, some political observers, including Republican Rep. Jimmy Patronis, express skepticism about its viability, suggesting that the rift between Musk and Trump may eventually mend. As the situation develops, the political implications of Musk’s actions and statements remain to be seen.
