Law enforcement officials have established a security perimeter around the home of Melissa Hortman, a senior Democratic state assemblywoman in Minnesota, following her murder alongside her husband, Mark, on June 14, 2025. The incident occurred during a politically motivated attack that has drawn significant media attention.
On the night following the Hortmans' deaths, police reported a break-in at their residence in Brooklyn Park. The authorities indicated that the plywood covering a rear window had been forcibly removed and the window broken to gain entry. Although the home appeared to have been searched, the family stated that nothing seemed to be missing. Police confirmed that all evidence related to the homicides had been collected prior to the break-in.
Vance Luther Boelter, 57, has been arrested in connection with the murders. Authorities allege that he impersonated law enforcement to enter the Hortman home before committing the crime. Boelter is also accused of shooting Minnesota Democratic state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, during a separate attack on the same day. The Hoffmans are expected to survive their injuries.
In addition to the Hortman and Hoffman incidents, investigators revealed that Boelter attempted to visit the homes of two other Minnesota lawmakers with intentions to kill. He now faces multiple charges at both the state and federal levels, with some charges potentially carrying the death penalty if he is convicted.
The investigation continues as law enforcement focuses on the implications of these violent acts on Minnesota’s political landscape.
