Authorities in Minnesota are conducting an active search for Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old suspect accused of a shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, early Saturday morning. The shootings also involved State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were both injured during the attack.
Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, provided an update on the search, describing it as "fluid." Boelter, who allegedly targeted the lawmakers in a planned attack while wearing police-like tactical gear, remains at large despite law enforcement's efforts. Investigators have received around 400 tips and are currently focusing on an area in Sibley County, where Boelter's vehicle and a hat believed to belong to him were found.
The search for Boelter has prompted heightened security measures in nearby areas. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that he may attempt to flee the country, although there is no specific evidence indicating a planned destination. Residents in Sibley County have been advised to remain cautious and keep their doors locked.
Senator Hoffman and his wife have sustained serious injuries, with reports indicating Hoffman was shot nine times and Yvette eight times. Both are currently undergoing medical treatment. The incident has drawn attention to the broader issues of political violence, with Yvette Hoffman expressing her devastation over the incident and condemning the underlying political hate.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Boelter's whereabouts to contact law enforcement.
