Meta on Tuesday introduced Muse Image, its first AI image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, placing the company in competition with image tools from OpenAI and Google. The launch is tied to Instagram, where the model is being integrated into features that allow users to generate images involving public profiles.
Under the new system, public Instagram accounts are included by default in a feature that lets others tag a username in a Meta AI prompt. If the tagged account is public, Meta AI can use public photos from that profile to create a generated image. Meta describes the feature as a way to make visual content more personalized, including for invitations, collaborative concepts, and graphics for posting.
Users who do not want their public Instagram content used this way can change their settings without making their account private. In the Instagram app, users can go to their profile, tap the menu icon, select “Sharing and reuse,” and look for a section related to allowing people to use their content on Instagram and with Meta AI features. The section includes separate controls for Posts and Reels. However, the updated wording may not yet appear for all users.
Instagram’s help center says people may be able to create content using a user’s Instagram material through Meta’s AI features if the account remains public and default settings are left unchanged. The company also says turning off the setting or switching to a private account will stop future generations, but will not delete AI images that have already been created.
Meta’s help page further states that users will not be notified when AI content is generated from their material. The rollout reflects a broader industry pattern in which AI-related data uses are often enabled by default, requiring users to review settings to opt out.
