Law enforcement officials provided details about the individual responsible for a tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, which resulted in the deaths of nine people, including a teacher and five children aged 12 to 13. The attacker was identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old who had been transitioning to female for about six years. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald confirmed that Van Rootselaar was born biologically male but identified as female in public and on social media.
In the aftermath of the shooting, which also claimed the lives of Van Rootselaar’s mother and brother at a nearby residence, police noted a history of mental health concerns associated with the shooter. Previous police visits to the residence had addressed issues related to mental health, and firearms had been seized in prior incidents.
Initially, law enforcement refrained from disclosing the attacker’s name and gender, with early reports describing the shooter as a woman in a dress and later using neutral terms. Speculation arose regarding a YouTube account linked to the shooter, which featured content indicative of the transgender community. Following the incident, the account was removed, with YouTube citing adherence to their Creator Responsibility Guidelines.
During a press conference, McDonald used female pronouns to refer to Van Rootselaar, reflecting the individual’s preference for identification. The incident has raised various discussions surrounding mental health, identity, and public safety in relation to gun violence. As investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
