Man approached U.S. Capitol with shotgun and tactical vest

A man was apprehended outside the U.S. Capitol after approaching the building while armed with a shotgun. According to U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan, the individual exited a white Mercedes SUV, wearing a tactical vest and gloves, and ran towards the Capitol before being stopped by law enforcement officers stationed at the site.

Upon their arrival, officers drew their weapons and instructed the man to drop his shotgun, which he complied with. Following his surrender, the man was taken into custody without incident. Inside the vehicle, police discovered a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask, and the shotgun was found to be loaded with additional rounds.

The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old not from the local area, has not been publicly named, and police are investigating his origins as the vehicle was not registered in his name. No motive for his actions has been disclosed at this time.

Chief Sullivan praised the quick response of the Capitol Police, noting that the incident underscores the importance of their ongoing active-shooter training exercises. He acknowledged the potential risks involved, stating, “Who knows what could have happened if we wouldn’t have officers here standing guard like they do every single day.”
