A gunman in Kyiv, Ukraine, killed six individuals before taking hostages in a supermarket. Ukrainian police reported that special tactical units responded to the situation after negotiations with the shooter failed. The gunman was ultimately killed during a police operation.
According to Ihor Klymenko, the head of Ukraine's Interior Ministry, the shooter first opened fire on four people in the street before entering the supermarket, where he killed a fifth victim. A sixth victim, a young woman, succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital. Eyewitnesses described the scene, noting the presence of emergency blankets covering the victims' bodies on the street.
The gunman, born in 1968, has not been publicly identified. Police negotiators engaged with him for approximately 40 minutes, attempting to persuade him to release the hostages. During this time, a female negotiator communicated with the assailant, urging him to let the hostages go. Despite these efforts, Klymenko stated that the decision was made to neutralize the gunman when it became clear that a wounded individual was likely inside the store.
Klymenko confirmed that the shooter was armed with a legally registered short-barrel assault rifle. He noted that the individual had recently sought to renew his weapon permit and had provided the necessary medical documentation. The investigation will further examine the origins of this medical certificate.
The incident occurred in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, prompting a significant police response as bystanders were evacuated from the area. The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding gun violence and public safety in Ukraine.
