In a recent development, Kirill Dmitriev, an investment envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposed the construction of an undersea rail tunnel through the Bering Strait, which he dubbed the "Putin-Trump Tunnel." This initiative aims to create a 70-mile connection between Russia and the United States and is intended to symbolize unity between the two nations. Dmitriev suggested that while such a project typically costs around $65 billion, advancements in tunneling technology from Elon Musk's Boring Company could reduce the cost to approximately $8 billion and allow for completion within eight years.
The proposal surfaced following a conversation between President Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump mentioned that high-level U.S. officials would soon meet with a Russian delegation to discuss potential resolutions to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, with a future meeting between Trump and Putin planned in Budapest.
Despite the ambitious nature of the project, it faces significant challenges. Construction would need to be conducted in harsh, below-freezing conditions with no existing infrastructure, and the area is prone to earthquakes. The Boring Company has not previously tackled such environments, with its past projects occurring in warmer, more developed locations.
Musk has not publicly responded to the proposal. The Boring Company has recently faced regulatory scrutiny, including fines for environmental violations related to its tunneling projects. Furthermore, Musk's connections to Russia extend to his electric vehicle company, Tesla, which has engaged in business transactions with Russian suppliers. This context may influence the feasibility and reception of the proposed tunnel project.
