Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith and U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan held a news conference at the Department of Justice, announcing the arrest of Brian Cole Jr. The arrest is connected to the placement of pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee offices in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, just prior to the Capitol riot.
Cole, 30, was taken into custody at his family home in Woodbridge, Virginia, nearly five years after the alleged incident. During interviews with the FBI, Cole reportedly confessed to planting the explosive devices, which did not detonate. He expressed support for President Donald Trump and identified with anarchist beliefs, according to reports.
Cole's defense attorney, John Shoreman, did not provide an immediate comment following the news of the arrest. At Cole's initial court appearance, the government indicated that he had spoken with authorities for over four hours the previous day. However, federal officials have not yet disclosed a specific motive for his actions.
Attorney General Pam Bondi addressed questions regarding Cole's potential motivations, stating that the investigation is ongoing. Cole faces serious charges, including transporting an explosive device across state lines with intent to kill, injure, or intimidate, as well as malicious destruction of property through fire and explosives. Bondi suggested that additional charges may be forthcoming.
This incident remains under investigation, and further updates are anticipated as the situation develops.
