Isaias may become a hurricane before reaching the U.S. Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Isaias formed off eastern Mexico on Wednesday, October 7, with forecasters warning that it could become the Atlantic season’s first hurricane before reaching the U.S. Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass on Florida’s Panhandle, indicating that hurricane conditions were possible within 48 hours.

At the time of the advisory, Isaias had sustained winds of 100 kilometres per hour and was about 805 kilometres south-southwest of the Mississippi River’s mouth. Forecasters expected it to strengthen on Thursday and said it might reach Category 3 intensity, with winds of at least 178 kilometres per hour. They cautioned that its track and timing could change.

Officials warned of dangerous storm surge from southeastern Louisiana to Florida’s Big Bend. Coastal areas could receive seven to 15 centimetres of rain, potentially causing flash floods, while rainfall could extend inland to Tennessee and the western Carolinas. The hurricane center said coastal flooding could extend beyond the hurricane watch area. The storm’s arrival would be unusually late for the season’s first Atlantic hurricane; the standing record dates to October 8, 1905.

Preparations were underway across the region. Florida’s governor declared an emergency in 25 counties, and officials in Pensacola provided sand for sandbags while utilities prepared repair crews. Organizers cancelled the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The storm could also affect a Saturday college football game between Georgia and Alabama.

Offshore producers temporarily halted about a quarter of Gulf oil output, equivalent to roughly 511,000 barrels a day, and evacuated eight manned platforms. An energy analyst described the immediate oil-market risk as moderate but rising, particularly if the storm reaches refineries. Forecasters urged coastal communities to prepare for impacts beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.
