Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it launched drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait on Sunday, after new U.S. airstrikes hit Iranian military targets. Kuwait said its defenses intercepted drones and two missiles, with no reported damage or casualties. Bahrain reported damage to a residential building near its international airport but no deaths. Both Gulf states host major U.S. military facilities.
The renewed exchanges come as Washington and Tehran attempt to negotiate an interim arrangement aimed at ending wider fighting. Pakistan, a mediator, has said talks are expected to resume Tuesday. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that negotiations could stop completely if U.S. attacks continue.
A central dispute is the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global energy shipments. A U.S.-overseen multinational maritime body said it would expand a route near Oman for commercial traffic. Iran argues it must oversee the strait, while much of the international community treats it as an international waterway. The maritime body said U.S.-assisted commercial transits continued despite security risks, though traffic remained below normal levels.
President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating a ceasefire and warned that further escalation could bring stronger U.S. military action. U.S. Central Command said its strikes targeted Iranian surveillance, communications, air defense, drone storage and minelaying capabilities after an attack on a tanker carrying Qatari crude.
The conflict is also linked to Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah have continued sporadic fighting despite a framework agreement signed last week. Hezbollah killed an Israeli soldier overnight, Israel reported. Iran called for a new “conflict control unit” involving Iran, the United States and Lebanon to meet quickly.
The overlapping disputes leave diplomacy under pressure, with maritime security, sanctions, port access, uranium stockpiles and regional fighting all unresolved within a 60-day negotiating window. Further incidents could complicate that schedule significantly.
