Incoming GOP China committee chair calls TikTok "digital fentanyl"

Rep. Mike Gallagher, the incoming chairman of the House Select Committee on China, has raised concerns about the security risks posed by the popular social media app TikTok. Gallagher has compared the app to "digital fentanyl", citing data on the potential corrosive effect of constant social media use, especially on young people. He believes that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has too much control over the app, citing censorship of politically sensitive content and potential opportunities for influence operations.

The company has denied the allegations of security risks and has argued that efforts to ban the app on government devices are simply political gestures. A potential deal to resolve the national security concerns is currently being negotiated with the US government, but no resolution has been reached yet.

In light of the security concerns, Gallagher has called for a ban on the app in the United States, as well as greater regulation of the app to create a healthier social media ecosystem. He has also called for reciprocity with the Chinese government, noting that Chinese officials are allowed on apps like Twitter but Chinese citizens are not allowed access to those same apps. Despite Gallagher’s calls, the app’s popularity continues to soar, leading some to question if it has grown too big to ban.

The debate over the security risks of TikTok is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the resolution will be. Gallagher’s calls for a ban and greater regulation have been met with some resistance, but the potential security risks posed by the app cannot be ignored.
