Illegal immigrant who killed 3 in highway crash crossed into California in 2018

Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian national, has been charged with three counts of negligent manslaughter following a fatal crash in Fort Pierce, Florida, on August 16, 2025. The collision occurred when Singh, operating a commercial semi-truck, allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn, resulting in his trailer jackknifing and colliding with a minivan. All three passengers in the minivan were killed in the incident.

Singh entered the United States illegally through California in 2018 and was subsequently apprehended by Border Patrol. He was initially processed for expedited removal but was released on a $5,000 immigration bond after expressing fear of returning to India, a claim supported by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Since then, he has been involved in ongoing immigration proceedings.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has classified Singh as a significant threat to public safety due to his criminal history, which has prompted enforcement action against him. DHS noted that Singh has no immediate family ties in the U.S. military and does not serve as a caretaker for anyone requiring assistance.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, and an immigration detainer has been issued for Singh. The executive director of Florida's Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has condemned Singh's actions as "shocking and criminal," emphasizing that he will face deportation after resolving his state charges.

The incident has drawn attention to the broader implications of immigration policies, particularly in relation to the issuance of commercial driver's licenses to individuals with uncertain legal status. A spokesperson for DHS criticized the situation, attributing responsibility to California's DMV for issuing Singh a license.
