New details have emerged regarding the helicopter crash that occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Hudson River, near Jersey City, New Jersey. The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter Tours, was carrying six individuals, including five family members from Spain. All on board were confirmed dead following the incident.
According to Michael Roth, CEO of New York Helicopter Tours, the pilot communicated a need to refuel just minutes before the crash. He noted that the helicopter was expected to arrive shortly but did not make it to the designated landing area. Witnesses reported that the aircraft exhibited erratic behavior before plunging into the water, with video evidence showing the rotor blades detaching during the descent.
The passengers included Agustin Escobar, a Siemens executive, his wife Mercè Camprubi Montal, and their three young children. The pilot's identity has yet to be disclosed. Emergency services responded swiftly, with divers from the New York City Fire Department and police personnel recovering the victims. Four were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others died at local hospitals.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the crash, with support from the Coast Guard and local authorities. The crash site, located less than a mile from Manhattan, prompted the Coast Guard to establish a safety zone in the area, which was in effect until the evening of the incident.
This tragic event marks the first helicopter crash in New York City since 2019. Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences to the victims' families, reflecting on the impact of such incidents on visitors to the city. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the cause of the accident.
