Hamas shares prisoner and hostage lists, raising hopes for Gaza peace talks

Hamas has provided Israel with a list of Palestinian prisoners it seeks to have released in exchange for hostages held in Gaza. Tahir Al-Nono, a political media advisor for Hamas, expressed a sense of optimism regarding ongoing negotiations in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt. He indicated that discussions are centered on ending the conflict, withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza, and facilitating a prisoner exchange.

These negotiations coincide with the second anniversary of a significant attack on Israel by Hamas, which sparked commemorative events and protests worldwide. According to a proposed peace plan by President Donald Trump, all hostages in Gaza, estimated to number around 48, are to be released in return for 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and an additional 1,700 Gazans detained after October 7, 2023. Among those Hamas is advocating for is Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian figure currently serving multiple life sentences in Israel.

World leaders, including Trump, have expressed cautious optimism about the talks, with Trump suggesting the potential for broader peace in the Middle East. A U.S. delegation, including Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, has arrived in Egypt to support the negotiations. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has also conveyed a hopeful outlook, inviting Trump to attend a potential signing of an agreement.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has indicated his country's willingness to facilitate discussions, emphasizing that the responsibility for achieving peace should not rest solely on the Palestinians. Key issues remain unresolved, including Hamas's disarmament and the future of a Palestinian state. Despite the ongoing negotiations, military actions in Gaza have continued, with daily casualty figures reported amid the conflict.
