Tensions escalated in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas following the recent handover of four bodies from Hamas to Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday that one of the bodies did not match any known hostages, casting doubt on the exchange process. The three confirmed bodies belong to Israeli captives Tamir Nimrodi, Uriel Baruch, and Eitan Levi, who were reportedly killed during the conflict, including actions attributed to both Hamas and Israeli airstrikes.
In response to the misidentification, Israeli officials reiterated their stance that Hamas must fulfill its obligations to return all deceased hostages. A government spokesperson emphasized that Israel would not compromise on this issue, underlining the commitment to securing the return of all captives.
According to the ceasefire agreement facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), for each Israeli body returned, Israel is to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies. So far, Israel has returned 90 bodies to Gaza, while Hamas has only returned seven of the 28 identified deceased hostages. Hamas has cited difficulties in locating some bodies, believed to be buried under rubble.
As the fragile ceasefire continues, the misidentification of the fourth body raises questions about Hamas's ability to meet its commitments and the overall stability of the truce brokered by U.S. officials.
