Hamas has released a video featuring an Israeli hostage, Evyatar David, who appears emaciated and is shown in a narrow underground tunnel in Gaza. This video marks the first public footage of a hostage in several months. David, 24, was taken during the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, which resulted in over 1,200 fatalities and approximately 250 people being abducted.
In the video, David is seen counting days on a calendar and is depicted digging what he alleges is his own grave. The footage is accompanied by images of Palestinian children who appear malnourished. David's family has publicly condemned the video, asserting that he has been intentionally starved as part of Hamas's propaganda efforts.
Currently, it is estimated that around 20 living hostages remain in captivity. Since the initial attack, 140 hostages have been released through negotiations, eight have been rescued, and 57 individuals have died in captivity or during rescue attempts. The release of David's video follows another video from the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad featuring a different Israeli hostage.
Discussions regarding the release of hostages continue, with U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump's envoy, expressing optimism about negotiating a comprehensive deal for the return of all remaining hostages. Meanwhile, broader ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel are stalled amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the United Nations warning of a potential famine scenario.
The UN has highlighted severe restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza, with reports indicating that over 1,373 Palestinians have died while seeking food since late May. The Israeli Defense Forces stated that they are reviewing reports of civilian casualties related to food distribution sites.
