Florida man arrested on Amtrak train with multiple weapons

A 34-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, named Jeffrey O. Kennerk, has been indicted in New Jersey after allegedly boarding an Amtrak train with a significant cache of weapons. The incident occurred on January 3, 2023, when Kennerk was apprehended at the Trenton Transit Center. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin described Kennerk's collection as a "small arsenal," which included assault weapons, handguns, silencers, and a booby-trapped rifle.

Authorities became aware of the situation after a New Jersey Transit Police officer received a tip regarding an unattended zebra-print suitcase located near the Newark Penn Station entrance. Upon investigation, they discovered a loaded handgun and additional ammunition. The suitcase reportedly contained an AK-47-style rifle and multiple loaded magazines. Kennerk had briefly left the suitcase to purchase an Amtrak ticket to Virginia before boarding the train, where he was eventually intercepted by law enforcement.

During his arrest, further weapons and ammunition were located, including an AR-15-style rifle and additional magazines. The Attorney General's office noted that one of the firearms discharged when an officer attempted to render it safe, indicating it was booby-trapped. In total, Kennerk faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of weapons and assault, with some charges classified as second-degree crimes.

This case raises concerns regarding public safety, especially in transit areas. Kennerk's actions could have had severe implications for passengers and the general public if not for the prompt response from law enforcement. As the legal process unfolds, he remains indicted on various charges related to weapon possession and public endangerment.
