Virginia State University Shooting Leaves One Critically Injured
Virginia State University was placed under lockdown early Saturday after a shooting near campus residence halls left five people wounded. Chesterfield County police said officers found the victims outside dormitories near the university’s Quad Annexes. One person, initially reported to have life-threatening injuries, was later listed in critical condition. The four other victims suffered injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.
University officials said the incident involved multiple suspects and urged students, employees and visitors to avoid the area. Campus police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are leading the investigation. Authorities had not released details about possible arrests, the identities of those involved or the circumstances leading to the gunfire. Officials did not indicate whether the victims were students or whether investigators had identified a motive for the attack.
A substantial law enforcement presence remained on campus Saturday morning. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office were assisting local investigators. Virginia State Police referred questions to county authorities, who said additional information would be provided later in the day.
The shooting occurred shortly before the beginning of the academic year. Residence halls had opened about a week earlier, and classes were scheduled to begin Monday. Many incoming students had recently completed the university’s “New Trojans Experience,” an orientation program designed to introduce them to campus life.
Virginia State University is a public, historically Black university in Ettrick, Virginia, with approximately 5,700 students, most of them undergraduates. It was the first fully state-supported four-year college established for Black Americans. As the investigation continues, officials have directed the campus community to follow law enforcement instructions and remain away from the affected area. The university and county police said further updates would be issued as confirmed information becomes available.
