Federal workers file lawsuit against Musk for firing threat over performance explanations

Federal employees have filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk, alleging that his recent demand for them to report their accomplishments violated legal norms. The lawsuit, filed in California, aims to halt mass layoffs initiated by Musk, who is advising President Donald Trump on federal workforce reductions. This controversy began when the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent a request for federal workers to detail their weekly achievements, leading Musk to threaten firings for non-compliance.

The amended complaint argues that there has never been a requirement for federal employees to submit such reports to the OPM, labeling the threat of mass firings as unprecedented. Musk's directive echoed his management style at his companies and came shortly after Trump encouraged him to adopt a more aggressive approach to federal workforce management.

As confusion spread, various federal agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security, instructed employees not to comply with Musk's request. Some lawmakers from both parties criticized the ultimatum, emphasizing the potential harm to employees' livelihoods. Notably, FBI Director Kash Patel urged employees to disregard Musk's demands for the time being.

The OPM's email specified a deadline for the accomplishment reports but did not mention any consequences for non-compliance. Responses from agency leadership varied, with some departments pausing actions related to the request.

Musk claimed that his approach was necessary to address perceived inefficiencies within the federal workforce, suggesting that some individuals may be fraudulently collecting paychecks. The situation continues to evolve, with thousands of federal employees reportedly preparing to leave their positions in the coming days amid the ongoing turmoil.
