FBI conducts raid at home and offices of LA school district superintendent

Federal authorities conducted a search on Wednesday involving Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The searches were carried out at Carvalho's residence in San Pedro and the LAUSD headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Additionally, a property in Miami linked to Carvalho was also searched by FBI agents.

The U.S. Attorney's office for the Central District of California confirmed that the search warrants were judicially approved but did not disclose specific details regarding the investigation, stating that the warrants are currently sealed. The LAUSD issued a statement indicating its full cooperation with federal officials during the investigation.

Carvalho has been at the helm of LAUSD since early 2022 and was recently reappointed for another term, set to continue until September 2025. Early reports indicated that staff members at the LAUSD headquarters were evacuated as federal agents arrived to execute the search. Footage showed agents entering and exiting Carvalho's home with various items, including a suitcase and cardboard boxes.

Carvalho, who immigrated to the United States as an undocumented individual, is recognized for his progressive educational stance, notably advocating for student protections against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. Prior to his role in California, he served as the leader of Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 14 years.

In the past, Carvalho faced scrutiny regarding a potential conflict of interest when he facilitated a significant donation from a company that had a contract with the district. Although an investigation concluded that the donation did not violate policies, it raised concerns about the appearance of impropriety.
