Meta recently announced that former U.S. President Donald Trump will soon be allowed to return to Facebook and Instagram, two years after his suspension was enacted. The decision follows the unprecedented suspension of Trump by numerous social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, after they determined that doing so outweighed the risk of potential further incitement of violence.
Meta noted that many reasonable people will disagree over whether this is the right decision. The company stated that it does not wish to inhibit open, public, and democratic debate on its platforms, however it may take action against posts that delegitimize an upcoming election or are related to QAnon. It also has the ability to remove the reshare button on posts that violate its guidelines or prevent them from being run as ads.
Trump will be subject to heightened penalties for repeat offenses and if he violates Meta's community guidelines again, the violating posts will be removed and he'll be suspended for between one month and two years.
Trump's accounts have not yet been reactivated on other social media platforms, and as such he has moved his musings to an app that he has backed, Truth Social, which closely resembles Twitter.
